Is Warfarin (Coumadin) Safe for Dogs?
Why it’s a problem
Warfarin blocks vitamin K–dependent clotting factors, so a dog that eats it can bleed internally without any visible wound. Signs are often delayed by one to several days, which makes exposure easy to miss. Warfarin belongs to the same chemical family as some rat poisons, so the injury it causes is the same kind.
How to keep your pet safe
Store all human blood thinners in a high or locked cabinet, and never leave a weekly pill organizer where a dog can reach it — dogs chew through organizers. Count tablets if someone in the home takes warfarin, and clean up any drops immediately. Never induce vomiting at home unless a professional tells you to.
Warning signs to watch for
Pale gums, weakness, bruising under the skin, nosebleed, bleeding gums, blood in urine or stool, black tarry stool, coughing or labored breathing from chest bleeding, sudden lameness, collapse.
When to call the vet
Call a vet or pet poison hotline immediately, even if your dog looks completely normal — bleeding can be delayed for days. Bring the medication container so the dose can be estimated. Early veterinary treatment with vitamin K1 greatly improves the outcome; never dose vitamin K on your own.
Common questions
My dog ate my warfarin pill but seems fine — can I just watch him?
No. Warfarin bleeding is delayed for days while clotting factors run out. Call your vet or a pet poison hotline now, with your dog’s weight and the tablet strength.
Is warfarin the same thing as rat poison?
It is closely related — warfarin was originally developed from rodenticide chemistry, and both work by preventing clotting. That is why any exposure in a dog is treated as serious.
