Is Vitamin D3 (Cholecalciferol) Safe for Dogs?
Why it’s a problem
Cholecalciferol overloads a dog’s body with calcium by triggering runaway release from bone and absorption from the gut. The excess mineral calcifies blood vessels and kidneys, leading to kidney failure within days. The concentrated form found in D3-only tablets makes this one of the most dangerous supplement poisonings seen by pet poison hotlines.
How to keep your pet safe
Store all vitamin D products in closed cabinets — dogs chew through soft plastic bottles. Never self-dose your dog with any vitamin, including products marketed for joints, immunity, or skin; supplementation should only happen under veterinary direction. Keep rodenticides containing cholecalciferol away from dogs as well.
Warning signs to watch for
Vomiting, loss of appetite, increased thirst and urination, drooling, constipation; one to three days later: lethargy, weakness, weight loss, kidney failure.
When to call the vet
Treat any confirmed or suspected ingestion as an emergency even with no symptoms yet. Call your veterinarian or a pet poison hotline at once — early treatment greatly improves the outcome.
Common questions
How much vitamin D3 is dangerous for a dog?
There is no safe self-dosed amount — concentrated D3 tablets can poison dogs, and small dogs are at greatest risk. If your dog has eaten any, call a veterinarian or pet poison hotline immediately with the bottle.
Can I give my dog my vitamin D for joint health?
No. Human vitamin D products can easily reach toxic levels in dogs, and damage builds silently over days. Ask your veterinarian whether supplementation is actually needed and use only pet-formulated products at a veterinary dose.
