Is Venlafaxine (Effexor) Safe for Cats?
Why it’s a problem
Cats have very little margin for SNRI overdoses, and human capsules contain far more drug than a feline dose could tolerate. Venlafaxine exposure has been reported to cause tremors, rapid heart rate, fever, and seizures in cats. Signs can progress over several hours because of the drug’s long activity.
How to keep your pet safe
Keep venlafaxine and all antidepressants behind closed cabinet doors, and never leave a pill on a counter where a cat can knock it down. Behavior treatment for cats should come from a veterinarian.
Warning signs to watch for
Vomiting, agitation, vocalizing, dilated pupils, tremors, rapid breathing, fast heart rate, fever; severe cases: muscle twitching, seizures, collapse.
When to call the vet
Call your veterinarian or a pet poison hotline at once — do not wait for symptoms in a cat. Provide the capsule strength and the maximum number possibly eaten.
Common questions
My cat batted a capsule around and may have bitten it — serious?
Yes — even partial ingestion of a human SNRI capsule can harm a cat. Call your vet or a pet poison hotline immediately for weight-based advice.
What is serotonin syndrome in cats?
A dangerous flood of excess serotonin that causes tremors, fever, racing heart, and seizures. It has been reported after accidental human antidepressant ingestion and needs urgent veterinary care.
