Mostly yes with care. Roman chamomile oil is among the gentlest for dogs, but only diluted, diffused lightly, and never swallowed.

Why it’s conditional

Roman chamomile oil is low in the harsh phenols and ketones that make many oils risky, so small diluted amounts rarely cause more than mild stomach upset in dogs. It is still a concentrate, and a dog that licks it off skin or drinks from a diffuser can get sick. Size matters — a chihuahua tolerates far less than a labrador.

How to keep your pet safe

Diffuse only a drop or two in a large room with the door open, and never apply neat oil to skin or fur. If using a pet product with chamomile, follow the label dose. Diluted chamomile products made for dogs are a safer route than the raw oil.

Warning signs to watch for

Drooling, vomiting, mild lethargy, skin redness if applied undiluted

When to call the vet

A lick of diluted product usually needs only monitoring. Call your veterinarian if neat oil was swallowed or if vomiting will not stop.

Common questions

Can I diffuse roman chamomile around my dog?

Brief diffusion of a small amount in a ventilated room the dog can leave is generally tolerated. Never trap the dog in a closed room with the diffuser.

Is chamomile safe to put on my dog’s itchy skin?

Not the neat oil. Ask your vet about pet-formulated sprays, which are diluted and dosed for canine skin.
