Not safely. Geranium oil can sicken a cat through grooming, skin contact, or heavy diffusion, and cats are more sensitive than dogs.

Why it’s a problem

Geranium oil is rich in geraniol, a terpene cats clear poorly because they lack glucuronyl transferase. Exposure through grooming licked-off oil or inhaling concentrated mist causes gut and airway irritation. It is milder than phenol-rich oils but still unsuitable for cats.

How to keep your pet safe

Never apply geranium oil to a cat or anything it grooms. If diffused at all, use a few drops briefly in a large, ventilated room the cat can leave. Store the oil in a closed cabinet.

Warning signs to watch for

Drooling, vomiting, lethargy, unsteadiness, skin irritation, coughing after heavy inhalation

When to call the vet

Call your veterinarian or a pet poison hotline if your cat was exposed and shows symptoms. Wash any fur contact with mild dish soap and keep the cat from grooming until it is done.

Common questions

Is diffusing geranium around my cat safe?

Only brief, passive diffusion in a big, ventilated room is lower risk, and the cat must be able to leave. Never apply the oil to the cat or use it in an enclosed space.

Can geranium oil keep my cat off the counter?

It may repel, but the residue is a real hazard because cats lick their paws after touching treated surfaces. Use double-sided tape or motion-activated deterrents instead.
